We want Professors who influence and inspire students.

Melanie Currie

Deputy Dean at Nottingham Business School

There’s a real belief that what we do here makes a difference to students, business and society.

I’VE BEEN HERE OVER 20 YEARS AND IN THAT TIME I’VE SEEN THE BUSINESS SCHOOL’S ENERGY, DESIRE AND SELF-BELIEF BUILD AND ACCELERATE TO TAKE IT TO WHERE IT IS TODAY.

People are really proud of what they have achieved. They’re proud of this School.

There’s a real belief that what we do here make a difference to students, business and society.

We’re a large School with almost 6,000 students. But even with such a large and diverse population we have maintained a national student satisfaction result of 90% with 94% of our students recommending us as a place to study. I think this is an exceptional achievement, and it’s certainly one that has helped us become a Top 20 Business School in the Guardian league tables.

TELL US OF A FUTURE YOU’D LIKE TO CREATE AND WE’LL GIVE YOU THE RESOURCES TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.

IT TELLS ME WE’RE GETTING IT RIGHT.

That it’s about relationships, and the strong connections between our teaching programmes and the research we are undertaking, and the relevance of our work to the real issues facing the outside world. We want our professors to tackle what matters most to business and society and we want them to influence and inspire colleagues and students to make a similar impact.

WE HAVE NO DESIRE TO MICRO-MANAGE PEOPLE.

Rather, we want to give them the freedom and support to follow their research passions and produce inspirational work that truly makes a difference. That way, our students learn from the process and the research, and from witnessing both success and failure.

A lot of my work as Deputy Dean is about rules and protocols. But at the centre of everything I do, driven by the University’s vision, is a desire to make the student experience as fulfilling, rewarding and empowering as it can be. The fact that we’ve won many awards and achieved the highest levels of accreditation and recognition tells me that we’re definitely going in the right direction.
